Drive in by Car

If you are searching for the right road to Transylvania Calling, check our Directions page!

Border crossing between Romania and its western neighbors is just a formality. When renting a car in Europe please check with the car rental company about its policy regarding taking the car across national borders. Insurance can be purchased at any Romanian border crossing point. Documents required by Romanian Customs are the vehicle’s registration, proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license from the driver’s home country.

Travelling by car or coach is the easiest way and a vast majority, over 60 percent of foreign tourists use this way of transportation. The steering wheel is on the left and European driver’s licenses are recognized by police. The vast overwhelming majority of all highways are only 2 lanes, but some national roads have 4 lanes.

If you have a good car and you also like speeding, be aware that Romanian police have recently bought very modern radars to catch speeding motorists. Speed limits are generally 90 km/h outside of a city and 40-50 km/h within a village.

Driving in by car

Petrol price at the moment is approx. 1,1 euro/l (gas or diesel) in Romania.

By law you need a sticker to use roads legally. However not many controls are happening there is a chance and so we recommend to get this sticker when u enter the country. Its really cheap and you can also take for a short period of time.

If you think it wont make it don’t risk it as your car might block the road, creating problems for you and others. Drive with window open to hear if other, go slow and with care, watch the traffic as there is often horse cars and other vehicles coming down the mountains with heavy loads of trees!

If you plan on traveling by car, there are several things to keep in mind when preparing your vehicle. You are traveling to Romania’s mountains in August. Temperatures can reach well above 35 degrees during the day. Keep in mind that your vehicle is going to be loaded with the extra weight from the gear that you will be taking to the Festival. Check your vehicle’s tires and air pressure again after loading your vehicle. These extra precautions can help avoid a breakdown. Do not load your vehicle where it limits your vision. You should be able to see out of all your windows. Take a break from driving often and regularly. Make sure to pay attention to the roadway and obey all traffic laws.

The organizer would like to encourage the use of public transport and carpooling. For those that drive please ensure all drivers heading to the gathering drive safely and take particular care on the roads. Please take special care and watch out for slow vehicles on Romanian roads. Take special caution on the Mountain road! Big Trucks can come your way and roads are narrow and steep!

Before leaving for the Journey, you should follow these tips to ensure your vehicle is ready for the trip.

Have your local mechanic inspect you’re:

  • 1. Radiator
  • 2. Belts
  • 3. Hoses
  • 4. Tires, including your spare
  • 5. Brakes
  • 6. Oil and waters
  • 7. Lights

Security reserves the right to search any vehicles entering or exiting and to refuse entrance or remove people that don’t respect the rules.  Local Police is present at the Gate at all times!
